Zero Carbon Group

A number Climate Action Groups were set up in 2015, aiming to address New Zealand’s rising greenhouse gas levels, decarbonise the business sector and transition to a zero carbon economy. The Zero Carbon Action group is made up of businesses who are committed to transitioning to a low carbon economy or become carboNZeroCertTM or CEMARS® accredited.

The Zero Carbon Group's ideas are refined at an interactive workshop, October 2016

New Zealand ratified the Paris Agreement in 2016, committing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 30% below 2005 levels by 2030.

It is essential that business support this commitment, show leadership and move together towards a low-emissions and climate resilient economy.

Members of the Zero Carbon Climate Action Groups have made a commitment to either transition to a low carbon economy or become carboNZeroCertTM or CEMARS® accredited.

This means they are measuring, reducing and publicly reporting on their carbon management action plans through the CEMARS® certification, or are certified carboNZeroCertTM through measurement, reduction and offsetting actions that are independently audited by Enviro-Mark Solutions.

Alternatively, the members are just starting their low carbon journey.

CEMARS + CarboNZero

Some of the benefits of demonstrating your low carbon journey in a credible manner include:

  • Cost savings. On average, organisations that are carboNZeroCertTM or CEMARS® certified save 23 per cent of the cost of carbon over three years.
  • Staff recruitment and retention. Colmar Brunton Better Futures Report says that 72 per cent of New Zealanders would rather work for an organisation that is socially and environmentally responsible.
  • Greater efficiencies. The process of gaining these certifications helps businesses create more efficient operations.
  • Better branding. These processes strengthen your reputation and gain credibility for your organisation.
  • Risk Management. These processes allow a business to better anticipate and manage risk.
  • Improved corporate social responsibility. Businesses can more readily demonstrate their good corporate citizenship.

Did you know? Offsetting one tonne of carbon brings an additional $664 NZD in benefits to the communities where the carbon projects are based.

Reimagining a better way

3R Group’s core business is focused on helping businesses minimise their impact on the environment. The company works with businesses to develop programmes to recycle or responsibly dispose of used products and packaging. It works with businesses who have a specific waste issue, as well as industries that are looking at the full life cycle of a product.

3R is an expert in product stewardship solutions. With this in mind, it was natural that 3R became a founding member of the Zero Carbon Climate Action Group, helping inspire action for a better environment. They measure, manage and offset their own carbon impacts and are keen to inspire other organisations to make meaningful change.
